A hidden gem of faith and family devotion in Icod de los Vinos
This small private chapel stands beside the estate of Las Granaderas, once owned by Captain Don Domingo de Torres Borges and his wife, Doña Josefa Mayón. In 1765, they obtained permission to build the chapel, dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption (Nuestra Señora del Tránsito). Don Domingo was the younger brother of Don Marcos de Torres, founder of the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows, with which this building shares several architectural similarities.
The chapel has a simple façade with a wooden door and a stone belfry positioned over a side opening corresponding to the private gallery. Inside, the rectangular space features a mudéjar-style wooden ceiling with an almizate decorated with geometric motifs. The gallery, connected to the adjoining residence, allowed the family to attend services privately, while beneath it lies the sacristy.
The main altarpiece conceals the apse and is divided into three sections, with a central niche housing the titular image, flanked by paintings —including one of the Virgin of Guadalupe, similar to that found in the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows. The image of Our Lady of the Assumption portrays the Virgin lying on a bed —a rare iconography in the Canary Islands. Installed in the chapel on August 10, 1768, it is one of only two such representations in the archipelago, along with the one kept at the Convent of Saint Catherine of Siena in La Laguna.
According to Catholic doctrine, the Virgin did not die but was assumed into heaven body and soul; therefore, she is depicted as peacefully asleep, lying down and surrounded by flowers, symbolizing this sacred mystery.
