Chapel of El Calvario

A place of faith, history, and tradition in Icod de los Vinos

Located in an elevated square accessed by a staircase, the Chapel of El Calvario was built in the mid-18th century in an area that was then scarcely populated. Over the centuries, it has undergone several reconstructions, especially after a fire in 1815 that required rebuilding the temple and changed its original dedication to that of Christ of Calvary —a Baroque image that arrived from Cuba in 1730.

The architecture of the chapel is simple, featuring a single nave, a wooden roof, and a small courtyard with a stone fountain, linked to the history of the neighborhood’s water supply. Inside, a Baroque altarpiece houses the image of Christ of Calvary, accompanied by the Virgin and Saint John.

Every last Sunday of September, this image becomes the centerpiece of one of Icod’s most important festivities, with processions, floral arches, and traditional decorations made of flowers that recall the town’s enduring devotion and artistry.
