Plaza de la Constitución (Plaza de la Pila) – The Historic Heart of Icod de los Vinos
Located in the very heart of Icod de los Vinos, this is one of the town’s most emblematic spaces. It forms part of the historic quarter declared a Site of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural) for its exceptional architectural and heritage value, and is surrounded by traditional manor houses dating from the 17th to 19th centuries. Although it has had several official names —Plaza Mayor, Plaza de la Constitución, or Plaza de Calvo Sotelo— locals have always known it as Plaza de la Pila, a name derived from the central fountain that once supplied water to residents.
The square was built in 1632 through a neighborhood initiative on the site of former houses and has since been a social, civic, and religious meeting point. It is home to several significant historic buildings, including Casa Lorenzo-Cáceres and Casa Álvarez.
One of the most remarkable features of this square is the traditional use of wood in the surrounding constructions, particularly in the carpentry and balconies. This material not only adds beauty but also recalls the town’s historic timber industry, once vital to Icod de los Vinos’ economy. This woodworking tradition is closely linked to one of the municipality’s most unique festivals, Las Tablas de San Andrés, which originated from the practice of sliding timber logs down steep streets—such as nearby San Antonio Street, just beside the square—to transport them to San Marcos Beach.
Over time, the square has evolved with gardens and decorative elements, maintaining its 19th-century romantic charm. Its charming garden features exotic and ornamental plants, including the bird of paradise (Strelitzia spp.), Chinese fan palm (Livistona chinensis), and hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla)—all species of great aesthetic and botanical interest. The stone fountain, with its elegant structure and flowing jets, remains a living symbol of the history and identity of Icod de los Vinos.
