San Francisco Convent Complex

Living history in the heart of Icod de los Vinos

Located in the very heart of Icod de los Vinos’ historic center, the former Franciscan Convent of the Holy Spirit, together with the Church of San Francisco and the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows, form one of the municipality’s most significant heritage sites. This architectural ensemble, declared a Site of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural), invites visitors to travel through centuries of history, art, and spirituality.

Franciscan Convent of the Holy Spirit

Founded in 1641, this convent housed the Recollect Franciscans until 1823. Since then, it has served various social and cultural purposes and is now home to the Municipal Library. Its architecture is organized around a magnificent tea-wood cloister with carved columns and a central fountain crowned by a statue of Neptune. Among its historical chapels are Our Lady of Sorrows and Mary Magdalene, both featuring exceptional Mudejar coffered ceilings and baroque decorative details.

Church of San Francisco

Attached to the convent, this austere single-nave church preserves a wooden ceiling and a beautiful rococo-style main altarpiece. It also houses a side chapel dedicated to Saint Didacus of Alcalá (San Diego de Alcalá) and an elevated choir with a wooden balustrade. Its simple yet elegant design reflects the Franciscan spirit of humility and devotion, making it a quiet, contemplative corner of great artistic value.

Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows

Also known as the Hurtado Chapel, this 18th-century gem is one of the most important private foundations in the Canary Islands. It features a baroque-rococo altarpiece, a Mudejar coffered ceiling, an original glazed-tile floor, and an impressive domed chamber (camarín) accessed by an imperial staircase. Inside, a richly decorated choir loft and distinctive Canarian religious elements add to its uniqueness.

This historic complex is not only a witness to the religious past of Icod but also a living cultural space that blends architectural beauty, local history, and spirituality. It is an essential visit for anyone seeking to discover the artistic and human legacy of Icod de los Vinos.

Plaza Domínguez Alfonso

This charming landscaped square, located next to the Franciscan Convent of the Holy Spirit — declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 1986 — is one of the most picturesque corners of the old town. With its small pond and surrounding greenery, it was popularly known as the “Plaza de los Patos” (Duck Square). Its construction required the removal of the old Calle Nueva and the creation of a raised platform supported by a retaining wall.

The square is named after Antonio Domínguez Alfonso (1849–1916), a distinguished Canarian politician and jurist who held high-ranking positions both in Spain and in the Philippines.
