A historic Marian sanctuary in the heart of Icod de los Vinos
Located in the neighborhood of El Amparo, this chapel was the first privately founded hermitage in Icod and the third to be built in the municipality. It was founded in 1598 by Pedro de la Cruz, a devout local who brought the image of the Virgin of Amparo from Rome. The chapel soon became an important center of pilgrimage and Marian devotion in northern Tenerife.
The architectural complex, which includes the former hermit’s house, has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural) for its historical and heritage value. The chapel stands out for its Rococo Baroque altarpiece, mudéjar-style coffered ceiling, and the distinctive exterior dome known as the media naranja (“half-orange”), which is still decorated during traditional festivities with fruits, flowers, and bread figures.
The image of the Virgin of Amparo, dating from the 16th century, is an Italian dressed statue (imagen de vestir), accompanied by other notable works such as the Christ of Amparo and sculptures of Saint Peter, Saint Paul, and Saint Dominic of Guzmán.
For centuries, this chapel has been a place of deep popular devotion and the setting for celebrations that blend faith, tradition, and local culture.
