Experience the essence of
Icod de los Vinos
The City of the Dragon Tree and the Taste of the Atlantic
Icod de los Vinos is a charming town located in the north of Tenerife, within the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Its capital lies in the historic center of Icod de los Vinos, known as The City of the Dragon Tree for being home to one of the island’s most iconic symbols: the majestic Drago tree.
Under the watchful gaze of Mount Teide —the highest peak in Spain—, Icod de los Vinos rises 233 meters above sea level, offering spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean from every corner. Along its coast, you’ll find natural treasures such as the popular San Marcos Beach and the fascinating Cueva del Viento, one of the largest volcanic lava tubes in the world.
The town’s name dates back to the ancient Guanche kingdom or menceyato of Icod de los Vinos, which existed before the Castilian conquest in the 15th century. According to some scholars, “Icod” may mean “fire” or “burn,” referring to past volcanic eruptions. Later, European settlers added “de los Vinos” (“of the Wines”) to highlight the area’s exceptional winemaking tradition, already renowned since the 16th century.
Today, Icod de los Vinos remains deeply connected to its agricultural and seafaring roots. Its wines, papas con mojo (potatoes with spicy sauce), salted fish, grilled meats, and artisan cheeses make up a rich gastronomy that captures the true spirit of this place.
Discover in Icod de los Vinos a unique blend of history, nature, culture, and flavor.

Opened in 1987, the Icod de los Vinos Butterfly Park was the first facility of its kind in Spain. This glass-enclosed tropical garden recreates the natural habitat of butterflies, allowing them to fly freely as they would in the wild. It offers a fascinating mix, where visitors can observe many butterfly species along with a variety of exotic plants.
Step into a unique tropical garden in the Canary Islands, home to over 800 exotic butterflies from around the world. At the Butterfly Park, you can observe more than 150 different species throughout the year. Due to their short lifespan — just 2 to 3 weeks — there are always new and surprising butterflies to see.
In addition to its beauty, the park offers the chance to witness all stages of the butterfly life cycle: from eggs and caterpillars to chrysalises and daily births. It’s an unforgettable experience to watch them emerge from the chrysalis and take their first flight after metamorphosis.
Thanks to a carefully controlled environment that mimics their natural habitat — with temperatures between 24 °C and 29 °C and 80% humidity — butterflies from different continents coexist in perfect harmony, without conflict between species.
An educational, visual, and exciting experience, ideal for all ages.

The Cueva del Viento is a volcanic cavity located in Icod de los Vinos, formed around 27,000 years ago by lava flows from the Pico Viejo volcano, near Mount Teide. With 18 kilometers surveyed, it is the longest lava tube in Europe and the fifth longest in the world, surpassed only by those in Hawaii.
Its name —“Cave of the Wind”— comes from the strong internal air currents. Inside, visitors can observe unique volcanic formations sculpted by flowing lava, giving the impression of being inside a petrified living organism.
The guided tour (approximately 2.5 hours, moderate difficulty) begins at the Visitor Center and is conducted in small groups (maximum 14 people). Helmets and headlamps are provided, as there is no artificial lighting inside the cave. The route includes a walk through farmland, pine forests, lava fields, and ancient royal paths, offering both a natural and ethnographic perspective of the surroundings.
