A corner of history and popular devotion in Icod de los Vinos
Located at the end of a steep street that bears its name, the Chapel of Saint Anthony of Padua was built in the early 17th century as an expression of gratitude from the townspeople for being spared from a plague epidemic. This small temple, born from popular initiative, stands out for its simple architecture, its beautiful Portuguese-style porch —known as media naranja (half-orange dome)— and its valuable 18th-century Baroque altarpiece.
Inside, the image of Saint Anthony of Padua is venerated —a figure deeply loved in Icod— depicted holding the Child Jesus under a silver canopy. The chapel also houses other historic images, such as an archaic 16th-century Saint Sebastian and a curious corner filled with wax ex-votos, tangible proof of the people’s enduring devotion.
Every June 13th, on the saint’s feast day, the chapel comes alive with color, flowers, fruits, and traditional Canarian music, reviving one of the town’s most heartfelt celebrations.
