Descripción
The current Town Hall of Icod de los Vinos stands on part of the former site of the Convent of San Agustín, which was demolished in 1953. Attached to the church of the same name—once the convent’s main chapel—it was built between 1952 and 1957 under the direction of architect Tomás Machado y Méndez Fernández de Lugo, one of the foremost exponents of the Neo-Canarian architectural style.
This two-story, L-shaped building is distinguished by its large wooden balcony, its semicircular stone arch, and the carved coat of arms of the municipality above the entrance. The design incorporates hallmark features of traditional Canarian architecture, such as stone masonry, basalt plinths, and ornamental woodwork.
Beyond housing the municipal offices, the building was originally conceived to include a school, market, library, and commercial spaces on its ground floor. Its construction also played a key role in the urban redevelopment of the surrounding area, including the reorganization of the streets adjacent to Plaza Luis de León Huerta.
